Addressing a joint press conference on Mauripur Road, MMA's provincial assembly member, Syed Abdul Rasheed along with Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Union Councillors clamoured for a long-running civic destruction with sewage flowing over roads and streets.
The provincial legislator and civic elected representatives also staged a protest sit-in on the road against the government's apathy towards Lyari, as power cuts plagued the daily life there. "The KWSB's corruption and inefficiency turned Lyari into sewerage pool of drains," Rasheed said, adding that all the union committees have fallen into corruption leaving the city's 'mother' i.e. Lyari deprived of basic civic facilities.
He asked the government to rebuild the decades old basic civic infrastructure, saying that "the 54-year old water and sewerage lines should be replaced". He said that the gas supplying pipelines have been filled with sewerage water for the lack of maintenance by the KWSB. "Sewerage water has mixed into the gas pipelines," he complained, demanding that the complete potable water share should be restored to Lyari.
The Education Department of DMC South has become a primary field for corruption, he alleged, appealing to the CM Sindh and other accountability institutions to probe into the department's financial scam. All the department of KMC and DMC should be investigated, he said and added that government should correct all of its departments and vowed that his party will not allow anyone do corruption.
About Rs14.4 million of direct funds given to the union committees, which should also be audited, Rasheed asked the local bodies representatives to give details of fiscal budget expenditures, saying that the NAB and Ehtisab Bureau should also step up to get the information about the budgetary allocations. He also demanded for a swift audit of honorarium the union councillors receive. "A Vice Chairman's monthly honorarium is Rs10,000, if someone receives more than that person is a thieve," he said.
The provincial legislator said that the DMC South receives Rs12 billion under the development heads in budget but there is no uplift work seen in the entire locality, questioning the financial disbursement and spending since the civic conditions are in tatters. He said that the details of Rs12 billion should be provided. He warned that he will lead a drive against the rampant corruption in Lyari if the financial mismanagement did not end at once.
